October 15th, 1973. The Devil's Stone Moves. The legendary Devil's Stone at the Gotthard road near Goeschenen, Switzerland, has to move. The huge rock is to give way to the construction of a highway, and now is to be moved away for about 60 metres. The legend goes that 2000 years ago a bridge on mount Gotthard was destroyed by a storm. The devil himself appeared and made an offer to the people of Goeschenen to build a new one overnight if they would give him the first soul who crossed the new bridge. The Goescheners accepted - and drove a goat first over the bridge. The deceived devil in his rage took this huge stone and threw it on the village - but failed. H/Keystone 1523/861554. |
