The Schöllenen, a sombre defile 2 1/2 miles long, bounded by towering and almost perpendicular granite rocks, begins immediately above Göschenen and extends nearly to the Devil's Bridge. The road, which ascends in windings, is much exposed to avalanches and at one of the most dangerous points is protected by a gallery. |
